HANNA – The Lingle-Fort Laramie wrestling team took the mats in Hanna for the Carbon County Invite this past weekend, with Gaven Niles finishing second.
Niles (126) started his weekend by beating Pinedale’s Kaleb Bigelow in an 8-5 decision, before besting Big Piney’s Creeden Schell in a 16-0 technical fall to head to the championship. In the title match, Niles went the distance but fell in a 9-2 decision against Colter Julian (Kemmerer).
L-FL’s 106-pounder Joel Costello started the weekend by pinning Blake Buce (Big Piney) in 17 seconds, followed by a loss by pin in the first period against Justin Shotwell (Saratoga). In the lower bracket, Costello picked up another pin over Saratoga’s Joey Gonzales, before being pinned in the first period by Kaden Brothwell.
Zane Rising was the final Dogger to record two wins, going 2-2 at 145 pounds. He started the day with a 20-10 major decision win over Wyatt Awetry, before picking up a 17-2 technical fall victory over Nick McDaniels (HEM). In the semi-finals, Rising was pinned in the first period by Cokeville’s Ammon Teichert. After dropping to the consolation bracket, the Dogger was pinned in the third period by Kemmerer’s Rayce Kindschuh.
Alex Pugsley joined Niles at 126 pounds on the weekend, falling in his first match by pin against Schell. Once in the lower bracket, Pugsley was pinned in the second period by Bigelow.
Dustin Swartwood took the mats at 145 pounds for L-FL, starting with a win by pin in the first over Kemmerer’s Nate Pinkerton. Wright’s Garrett Strohschein pinned Swartwood in the first period, sending the Dogger to the consolation bracket, where he fell by pin fall in the first against Kindschuh.
“I was anticipating us looking a little flat and worn down, as we were finishing up our peak phase,” coach Brandon Gifford said. “Luckily, we had planned for this, so I’m not too disappointed with the way we wrestled.”
Led by Niles’ second-place finish, the Doggers placed 11th as a team with 31 team points. Cokeville took the top spot with 172.5 points, with Kemmerer (155.5) and Pinedale (129) rounding out the top-three.
The Doggers return to action this weekend for the 2A East Regional Tournament in Burns.
“We have some areas for each guy that we will be working on this next week to get us ready to wrestle our best at the regional tournament,” Gifford said. “The guys are excited and ready to go to make the final two-week push of the season.”
