BURNS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers won the middle of three games over the weekend at the Burns Winter Classic to finish the weekend 1-2.

The Doggers opened with a 73-47 loss to Little Snake River but bounced back to knock off Moorcroft in the first of two games Saturday before falling to Saratoga in overtime to cap off the weekend.

It was a tale of two halves for the Doggers.

L-FL grabbed an early lead behind a pair of buckets from junior Caden Riley.

“I thought Caden had a tremendous game,” L-FL coach Steve Zimmerman said. “He played very well on the offensive end.”

It was a lead which the Doggers held for much of the first half.

Little Snake River took its first lead of the game with just under three minutes remaining before halftime.

It was a lead which only grew for the Rattlers.

“We scored a lot on the block in the first half, and in the second half, our perimeter game, we didn’t hit shots and throw the ball away. That’s what it really came down to,” Zimmerman said.

In the third quarter, Little Snake River went on a 17-2 run to pull away, grabbing a 55-36 lead late in the quarter.

“We didn’t rebound well,” Zimmerman said. “We were standing and watching instead of going and getting the ball. We’ve got to get that fixed.”

The Doggers were led in scoring by senior Ty Mueller with 21, while Riley added 13 points.

The next day, the Doggers opened with a 48-34 win over the Moorcroft Wolves.

L-FL jumped out to a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter and slowly pulled away over the final three quarters of play for the first win of the season.

After extending its lead to 12 at the half, L-FL limited the Wolves to only two points in the third quarter to take a 40-32 lead into the final eight minutes of play.

Mueller led the Doggers with 20 points, while Riley added 11. Sophomore Cordell Forkner added five, while junior Bailey Powell, sophomores Cooper Hill and Scott Gilchriest added four each.

The Doggers came up short in overtime in the final game of the Winter Classic.

L-FL trailed much of the first half, finding itself down 29-23 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Doggers exploded for 23 points, tying the game at 46 apiece going into the fourth quarter.

After eight more minutes, the game was still tied, forcing an extra period.

Saratoga outscored L-FL 6-4 as the Doggers final shot just missed.

“We played very well Saturday,” Zimmerman said. “Morrcroft we jumped on early and maintained for the rest of the game.  Saratoga who we felt was one of the top teams there we played very well going to over time and missing a shot at the end to win or tie.”

Riley led the Doggers with 19 points, while Mueller added 17. Forkner tossed in eight, while Powell had six.

L-FL hosts the Dogger Classic Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Doggers will face the Hulett Red Devils at 4:30 p.m. The next day, the Doggers will face Midwest at 10:30 a.m. and Kaycee at 4:30 p.m.
