District gauges support for parent leader groups

GOSHEN COUNTY – This week, Goshen County School District No. 1 sent out a survey designed to measure the support of parent leader groups in the area.

“We’re going to try to get some parents who want to be parent leaders,” Superintendent Jean Chrostoski said at a board of trustees meeting Tuesday. She explained the groups will try to reach out to other families with students in the district.

The survey is available in both English and Spanish on the GCSD website at goshen1.org. Parents are invited to respond to 33 inquiries, including: “I have met with my child’s teacher(s) to see how my child is doing more than twice during the current school year; I know how my child is doing socially in school; I could use support with helping my child with social and/or emotional challenges; I could use support in helping discuss peer pressure about smoking, drinking and drug use with my child; I am comfortable in my ability to speak and connect with other parents; Once in awhile, I worry about violence at my child’s school; I have very few barriers to becoming involved with my child’s school.”

Most of the answer options range from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree”. There are also demographic questions and spaces for written comments.

“I thought (the survey) was done very well,” GCSD Chairman Carlos Saucedo said.

n During the Superintendent’s Report, Chrostoski stated 10 students tested positive for drugs throughout the 2017-18 school year – the same number as last year. She also said Lynette Saucedo has taken the reins as TeamMates Mentoring coordinator. Saucedo recently secured a $1,500 grant through Goshen County Economic Development Corporation and several activities are planned for the upcoming year.

“Several students at (Torrington Middle School) are waiting on mentors,” Chrostoski said. “We need to encourage more people to be part of it.”

n The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10 at 7 p.m. The annual budget hearing will also be held at this time.
