Dennis Ray Murphy

TORRINGTON – Private family services for Dennis Ray Murphy, 70, will be held at a later date. Dennis died Oct. 9, 2019, at Community Hospital and cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Comfort Care Unit at Community Hospital. The Colyer Funeral Home assisted the family with the cremation arrangements.

Dennis was born Dec. 4, 1948 in Torrington, the son of Lowell and Faye (Harris) Murphy. He grew up and received his education in Torrington graduating high school in 1967. He attended Eastern Wyoming College for a short time. He had an appointment to the Air Force Academy to wrestle but stayed home to raise his family. He was a multi-sport letterman in football, wrestling and track and was inducted into the Blazer Hall of Fame for wrestling. 

He was married to Lynn McBrayer for 16 years, had two children and later divorced. He worked at Plains Building Supply (the family business) from 1967 until its closing. After that he worked as a construction contractor up until shortly before his death.

Dennis enjoyed woodworking, camping, hunting, model railroading, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a supporter of Wyoming Wildlife, the NRA and helped found the Goshen County Sheriff’s Posse, where he served as president.

Dennis is survived by two sons Jason (Jeniffer) Murphy of Torrington, and Jon Murphy of Cheyenne; his mother Faye Murphy of Torrington; two brothers Don (Margie) Murphy and Billy (Marty) Murphy of Torrington; grandchildren Darby Murphy, Delaney Murphy, Brock (Courtney) Murphy, Austin (Hallie) Murphy, Logan Murphy and Cameron Murphy; and great-granddaughter Addison Murphy. 

He was preceded in death by his father Lowell Murphy.
