LINGLE – Both the Southeast Cyclones and the Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers came into Friday night’s matchup in very different situations.
The Cyclones were handed a 40-7 loss to the Shoshoni Wranglers, while the Doggers were playing in their first game of the season after a forfeit loss to Wind River a week before.
Each team traded possessions on their first drive of the game. Southeast’s drive stalled and ended with a punt, while Lingle came up short on a 4th-and-3 attempt.
It wasn’t until the 4:56 mark in the first quarter when Southeast quarterback Grant Logsdon slipped past the Dogger defense for the game’s first score.
It proved to be the first of two scores of the quarter for Southeast, as senior running back Ryan Clapper added a second touchdown three minutes later to go up 13-0.
With 15 seconds left before halftime, Logsdon punched the ball across the goal line on a 1-yard keeper to put the Cyclones in front 20-0 heading into the locker room.
After L-FL’s fourth punt of the game to start the second half, with 7:31 left in the third quarter, Clapper sprinted 11 yards to the end zone in what proved to be the final score of the game for the Cyclones.
“We got way to one-domanial. When you put nine guys in the box, it’s hard to run the ball,” Cyclone coach Mark Bullington said. “We were a lot better this week than we were last week as far as mistakes and stuff like that.”
On the ensuing drive, Lingle threatened for the first time in the game. With 53 seconds left, the Doggers had driven down to the Southeast 5-yard line.
“We knew it was going to be a tough ballgame. Southeast is a good ball club,” L-FL coach Brandon Gifford said. “We are excited about the young guys. We did a lot of growing up. To be honest, this year’s team, we needed to see them respond and needed to see them play a full game. We’ve started seeing that.”
L-FL sophomore quarterback Nolan Spears connected with freshman receiver Louden Bremer for a touchdown, but the score was wiped off the scoreboard due to a penalty on the home team.
In the first minute of the fourth quarter, Bremer hauled in an interception near midfield, and four minutes later, the Spears to Bremer connection worked again. This time the 20-yard pass stayed, and the Doggers were on the scoreboard for the first time in 2021.
“He’s a great athlete. Great kid. Coachable. Loves the sport. Loves his teammates,” Gifford said. “I can’t say enough positive things about Louden Bremer. He’s going to be a good one. The guys around him want to work hard because of his success.”
Both coaches felt like their teams took a step in the right direction after the game.
“It was good for them,” Bullington said of his young squad getting the win. “We have to build on it. We have to get better every week.”
“It is something to build on,” Gifford added.
Both teams are back in action this weekend. Southeast (1-1) hosts Wind River (2-0) at 5 p.m. in Yoder, while the Doggers (0-2) travel to Wright (1-1) for a 7 p.m. contest.
