Cyclones take 20 top-six places

MORRILL, Neb. – Thirteen Cyclones combined to rack up 20 top-six finishes at the Morrill Early Bird Invitational on Saturday.
Chase Lovercheck was the only Cyclone to pick up a title, finishing first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:03.50. He rounded out his individual day on the track with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking 53.54 seconds. Jacob Schmitt also competed in the 400, taking fifth with 55.18 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Jacob Cushman ran a 12.11 to take fourth and Porter Ross ran a 12.34 to finish sixth. Rounding out the sprints, Brady Fullmer took fourth, turning in a time of 25.26 seconds. Cushman took fifth (25.49 seconds) and Ross finished eighth (26.07).
Patrick Swank was the only Cyclone to compete in the distance races. He led the 3,200-meter run until the last lap, but still came out with a second-place finish with an 11:56.28 effort. In the mile, Swank finished sixth with a time of 5:44.92.
Ross took the bronze in long jump, launching himself 18 feet, 2 inches. Werner was not too far behind, finishing sixth with a distance of 17 feet, 6 inches. Werner also picked up a third-place finish in the triple jump (36 feet, 10 inches). Greg Logsdon recorded 30 feet, 11.5 inches in the triple jump to earn himself the 10th spot.
Fullmer was the best thrower for the Southeast boys, taking seventh in the discus with a throw of 110 feet, 2 inches. Lovercheck (11th, 95 feet, 4 inches) and Schmitt (13th, 89 feet, 8 inches) joined Fullmer in discus. Swank and Luke Haas were the only Cyclones to throw shot put. Swank finished 21st with a 28 feet, 11 inch effort and Hass took 23rd with 27 feet, 10 inches.

The relay team of Schmitt, Fullmer, Lovercheck and Connor Humphrey took first in the 4x400, clocking a time of 3:43.64. In the 4x100-meter relay, Werner, Fullmer, Cushman and Humphrey finished in 47.35 to earn third.
As a team, the boys finished fourth in the team standings, racking up 67 points. Of the four Wyoming schools (Burns-fifth, Niobrara County-eighth and Guernsey-Sunrise-ninth) the Cyclones had the best finish. Mitchell, Neb. won the event, racking up 172 team points.
Candee Coxbill had the best finish among the Lady Cyclones, taking second in the discus with a 94 foot effort. She finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 6 inches.
“She went to state for us last year and she did a really good job,” girls’ coach Bart Treutwein said. “She really likes to throw the discus and she works really hard at it.
Kylie Carson took sixth in the discus (88 feet, 8 inches). Morgan Ekwall placed ninth in disc (82 feet, 1 inch) and 16th in shot (26 feet, 4.5 inches). Kaci Schmick was the best Southeast girl in the shot put, taking 12th with a throw of 27 feet, 9 inches.
Ellie Schmitt took fifth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 2 inches. Kendall Haas effort of 12 feet, 10 inches, earned her a ninth-place finish in the long jump. Senior Emily Buchanan took 11th in the triple jump, jumping 27 feet, 3.25 inches.
On the track, Schmitt had the best finish, taking fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:06.44). Kelci Lovercheck was not far behind, taking sixth, clocking 1:07.67. In the other sprints, Haas competed in the prelims (13th, 15.35) of the 100-meter dash but missed the cut for the finals. The same went for Buchanan (12th, 30.38) and Schmitt (13th, 30.42) in the 200-meter dash.
Jayden Hopkins finished eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:49.79. Lovercheck turned in a time of 2:51.57 to take 10th. Haas was the only Lady Cyclone to compete in the hurdles, taking ninth in the 100-meter hurdles (20.56 seconds).
The 4x400-meter relay team of Hopkins, Buchanan, Schmitt and Lovercheck completed the event in 4:36.71 to finish third.
The Lady Cyclones finished eighth as a team, racking up 19.5 team points. Mitchell, Neb. took home to girls’ team crown with 153 points.
“We didn’t have a lot of placers, but we got them all involved and all going,” Treutwein said.
