Cyclones snag fourth in Mitchell

MITCHELL, Neb. – Eight Southeast Cyclones placed at the Mitchell Invite, including four second-place finishes, to finish fourth as a team.

Greg Logsdon turned in a second-place finish at 113 pounds. He started the day with a 17-1 technical fall against Conrad Sibal (Gering JV), followed by an 18-11 decision over Marquis Barazza (Gering JV). In the championship match, Logsdon was pinned by Morrill’s Nathaniel Murillo.

Brady Tosh (170) started his day with a bye, before pinning teammate Conner Smith in the third period. In the semi-finals, the Cyclone beat Bridgeport’s Charles Lange by a 10-7 decision to advance to the first-place match, where he was pinned in the first period against Will Howell (Morrill).

At 182 pounds, Tate Carson was another Cyclone to take second, starting the day with a bye. In the semi-final, Carson won by medical forfeit over Burns/Pine Bluffs’ Jeff Langlois. In the first-place match, Carson was pinned in the first period by Logan Coalson (Bridgeport).

Heavyweight Hunter Woodruff had a bye to start his day, before pinning Mitchell’s Keegan Weiss at the 1:10-mark. In the title match, Woodruff was pinned in the second period by Curtis Freeze (Bridgeport).

Wyatt Lackman had an opening round bye at 120 pounds, before falling in a 5-3 sudden victory match against Mitchell’s Max Palomo. In the lower bracket, Lackman had a bye and went on to win by an 11-2 decision over Matthew Kohel (Mitchell) to capture third.

Bryan Baker’s (195) day started with a pin at the 3:30-mark over Kimball’s Stephen Bateman. Ben Banville (Burns/Pine Bluffs) got the better of Baker in the semi-finals with a pin in the third period. In the lower bracket, the Cyclone beat Torrington’s Riley Grubbs by a 15-8 decision, giving him third.

Kaden Brothwell stepped into the 106-pound weight class to represent Southeast, starting his day with a loss by pin in the third period against Mitchell’s Hadley Markowski. In the lower bracket, Brothwell rattled off two wins, pinning Christian Gonzales (Scottsbluff JV) in the second period and Joel Costello (Lingle-Fort Laramie) in the third period. Markowski came back in the third-place match to best Brothwell with another pin in the second period.

Ethan Steinhausen took the mats at 160 pounds. He had a bye, before falling by pin in the first period against Morrill’s Austin Garcia. After another bye, Steinhausen was pinned in the second period against Mitchell Miller (Burns/Pine Bluffs) in the third-place match.

Conner Smith (170) was the final Cyclone to compete in Mitchell. He had a bye and then was pinned late by teammate Tosh. Smith had another bye, before being pinned in the third period against Mark Merryfield (Burns/Pine Bluffs).

Southeast amassed 86.5 points to slide into the fourth slot, edging out Burns/Pine Bluffs’ 85 points. Bridgeport, Neb. took the top spot with 176.5 points, followed by Mitchell, with 158, and Morrill, with 125.

Ron Thon

A pair of Cyclones headed for the premier Ron Thon over the weekend in Riverton. Chase Lovercheck (152) started his weekend with a pin over Cody’s Orin Oilar in a minute. He went the distance in his next two matches, losing to Moorcroft’s Casey DeLong (10-4) and Kelly Walsh’s Kevin Anderson (9-3).

Brock Blevins took the mat at 113 pounds for Southeast, falling in his opening match to Star Valley’s Logan Hoopes by a pin in the second period. After a bye in the lower bracket, Blevins went the distance in a 3-2 decision loss against Mica Herrera (Moorcroft).

Southeast’s full team returns to the mat Saturday to compete at the Southeast Duals in Yoder, with action kicking off at 9:30 p.m.
