After suffering an opening round loss to Rocky Mountain, the Southeast Cyclones closed out their season with two wins at the 2A State Tournament in Casper over the weekend, capturing the consolation championship.

CASPER – After suffering an opening round loss to Rocky Mountain, the Southeast Cyclones closed out their season with two wins at the 2A State Tournament in Casper over the weekend, capturing the consolation championship.

Rocky Mountain 66, Southeast 44

Southeast came out slow against the Grizzlies, with Rocky Mountain taking a 10-2 lead early in the first frame and after the first eight minutes of action, the Cyclones faced a 16-7 disadvantage. In the second quarter, Southeast was outscored 18-11 to face a 34-18 deficit at intermission.

Southeast started chipping away at the Grizzly lead in the third quarter. The Cyclones cut the lead to 41-29 with 2:56 left in the third and they went on to cut the lead to single digits, but Rocky Mountain hit a bucket at the horn to take a 46-35 lead into the fourth. Rocky Mountain exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Sterling Werner was the top scorer for Southeast, pouring in 15 points, nine of which came from the free-throw line, where he shot 9-of-13. The senior finished with a double-double, notching 14 boards, an assist, a block and a steal.

Sawyer Anderson came in off the bench and played more than 20 minutes, racking up eight points, a rebound and a steal. Michael knocked down both of his three-point attempts to finish with six points.

Brady Fullmer turned in four points, two rebounds and an assist before fouling out. Kaden Malm had three points, a rebound and two steals, before suffering an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the game. Brant Fullmer stepped up in Malm’s absence, playing the point for much of the second half, finishing with four points, two assists and a steal.

Rounding out the scoring, Bodie and Cade Herring had two points apiece, while combining for four rebounds, two assists and three steals.

The Cyclones shot only 28.3 percent from the floor, including 2-of-18 from behind the arc, while Rocky Mountain hit 60.5 percent of their shots, including 5-of-7 from three-point land. Despite the loss, Southeast outrebounded Rocky Mountain 36-30.

Southeast 72, Wright 61

The Cyclones stormed out to the lead in a loser-out game against Wright, doubling up the Panthers in the first quarter, 18-9. Southeast added another 17 points in the second quarter to hold a 35-24 lead at the break.

Southeast poured in 20 points in the third quarter while limiting Wright to 11 points to sit ahead 55-35. The Panthers put together a solid fourth quarter with 26 points, but the Cyclones stayed ahead with 17 points of their own in the frame to snag the win and move on.

All five starters for Southeast scored in double-figures. Brady Fullmer and Cade Herring both poured in 14 points. Herring also had three assists, while Fullmer racked up five boards, two assists and a steal.

Hayden Anderson tallied 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Malm and Werner both had 11 points in the win. Werner notched another double-double, recording two steals and team-highs on the glass, with 11 rebounds, and in dimes, with four assists. Malm racked up two boards, an assist and a team-high four steals.

Bodie Herring shot 3-of-4 from the charity stripe for three points and a rebound on the night. Brant Fullmer and Sawyer Anderson both had two points, while Harrison Hall and Tim Becker both notched a point. The foursome combined for three rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Southeast improved its shooting percentage to 50 percent from the floor, including 55.6 percent from behind the arc.

Southeast 60, Wyoming Indian 58

After the win over Wright, Southeast advanced to the consolation championship against Wyoming Indian. The Cyclones took a 14-11 lead after the first frame. Both teams improved their offenses in the second quarter, with Southeast racking up 18 points and the Chiefs adding 17 points to their total.

The Chiefs poured in 16 points in the third, while limiting Southeast to nine in the frame, sending the game to the fourth with Wyoming Indian leading 44-41. Southeast was not ready to end its season on a loss and scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to Wyoming Indian’s 14 to complete the rally and win by two.

Hayden Anderson had six points from deep and four points from the charity stripe, finishing the game with 18 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Werner had a monster of a game, racking up 16 points and 20 rebounds, including five on offense. He also had an assist, two blocks and two steals. Fellow senior Brady Fullmer notched 15 points, five boards and an assist. The third senior in Malm had 10 points, three rebounds, a steal and a team-high four assists.

Cade Herring rounded out the scoring with one point, along with four rebounds and an assist. Brant Fullmer finished the game with two boards and an assist.

The Cyclones finished the year with a 14-13 record. Pine Bluffs won the state title over Wind River, while Rocky Mountain took third over Upton.
