Cyclones lose home thriller to Burns

YODER – A three-pointer by Burns with less than 10 seconds on the clock downed the Southeast Cyclones on Saturday at home, 44-43.
The Cyclones and Broncs were tied at 12 after the first frame. Southeast gained a three-point advantage by intermission, 25-22. The Cyclones added some distance in the third quarter, outscoring Burns 14-8.
After being down by nine heading into the fourth quarter, Burns began to mount a comeback. With 1:14 left, the Broncs trailed by four, trimming that lead to two with 30 seconds left. They nailed a three with 3.2 seconds remaining. Connor Humphrey had a contested lay up at the buzzer that bounced off the rim, but did not drop.
The Cyclones had three players in double-figures. Jacob Schmitt led the way with 12 points, while Brady Fullmer and Chance Werner added 11 points apiece. Fullmer was second on the team in boards, with four, while Schmitt and Werner combined for four. Schmitt and Fullmer each had three assists and a steal. Fullmer had a team-high two blocks.
Outside of the top-three, Dalton Keller, with four, Sterling Werner, with three, and Humphrey, with two, rounded out the scorers for the Cyclones. Sterling Werner led Southeast in rebounds, with five, and assists, with four.

In the losing effort, Southeast shot 43 percent from the field, including 5-of-9 from behind the arc. The Cyclones were sent to the charity stripe 11 times against Burns, but knocked down only four free throws.


Southeast 46, Lusk 24
In previous season action, Southeast blanked Lusk in the first quarter on the road Friday on their way to a 46-24 win.
After the 14-0 lead after the first frame, the Cyclones took a 23-4 advantage into intermission. The Tigers scored 10 points in both the third and fourth quarters, while the Cyclones poured in 23 points in the second half to cruise to the win.

Chance Werner and Fullmer were the top-two scorers for Southeast. Chance Werner poured in 12 points, while Fullmer added 11. Fullmer also tied for the team-lead in boards, with 13, giving him a double-double on the night. The two combined for 17 boards, two assists and three steals.
Schmitt and Keller each had eight points against Lusk. Schmitt had nine rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Keller recorded a board, two assists and two steals. Sterling Werner had the last seven points for Southeast and he added 13 boards and three assists to his stat line.
In the win, the Cyclones shot 32 percent from the field, compared to Lusk’s 16 percent. Southeast hit 4-of-20 from behind the arc and were sent to the line for 21 free throw attempts, hitting only 10.
The two games over the weekend put Southeast at 11-9 this winter. There are only two games remaining in the regular season for the Cyclones. They take on Pine Bluffs at home Friday at 6 p.m. and hit the road to play Glenrock Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
