BURNS – The Southeast Cyclones boys finished fifth as a team, with seven top-eight finishes, while the girls had six top-eight finishes to take seventh at the Burns Invitational on Thursday.
Patrick Swank had the best finish among all of the Cyclones, earning silver and bronze. In the 1600-meter run, Swank finished in 5:36.83 to take second. He turned in a time of 12:04.33 in the 3200-meter run to finish third. In the final distance event, Andrew Cox finished 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:54.86.
“Patrick Swank did as good as anyone. He is still young,” coach Mark Bullington said. “He is still a freshman so he will get better but I thought he did well especially for the wind.”
In the 200-meter dash, the Cyclones had two runners place in the top eight. Jacob Cushman took fifth in the finals with a time of 24.49 seconds, while Connor Humphrey clocked a time of 25.13 seconds to finish eight. In the prelims, Cushman finished fifth (24.58 seconds), Humphrey finished eighth (25.14 seconds) and Luke Haas finished 11th (26.54 seconds).
Southeast did not have as much success in the 100-meter dash, with Humphrey sliding into the eighth spot with a time of 12.40 seconds in the finals. Humphrey finished ninth in the prelims (12.19 seconds), while Cushman and Brady Fullmer tied for the 11th spot (12.25 seconds). Haas was not far behind, taking 13th with a time of 12.52 seconds.
Fullmer was the only Cyclone boy to compete in any hurdles, taking eighth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.41 seconds.

Cushman, Fullmer, Humphrey and Chance Werner was the only relay team for the Cyclones, taking fourth in the 400-meter relay with a time of 48.93 seconds.
The Southeast boys had athletes in only two field events, the shot put and the discus. Fullmer took 11th in the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 7.5 inches. Hunter Woodruff slide into the 18th spot in the discus, recording a throw of 84 feet, 8 inches. In the shot put, Woodruff took 16th with a throw of 34 feet, 10 inches.
As a team, the Southeast boys tallied up 26 team points, just above Potter-Dix, Neb., who took sixth with 25 points, and Cheyenne East, who finished sixth with 24 points. Gering, Neb. took the team title with 266 points.
Emily Buchanan was the only Lady Cyclone to compete in a running event, taking fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:10.25.
Kendall Haas had a go at the hurdles. She took sixth in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.59 seconds. In the finals, she recorded the same time to finish seventh. Haas finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 58.75 seconds.
In the throwing events, Kylie Carson took seventh in the discus with a throw of 95 feet, 2.5 inches. Kaci Schmick was just behind Carson, recording a throw of 90 feet, 2 inches to snag eighth. The same two throwers competed in the shot put. Carson took 10th (29 feet, 3.75 inches) and Schmick finished 12th (27 feet, 11.5 inches).
“We had a couple throwers do really well,” Bullington said. “They PR’ed, which is good.”
The Lady Cyclones racked up 12 team points to take seventh, just behind Banner County, Neb., who took sixth with 17 points. Gering also took the top spot in the girls division, amassing 215.5 team points.
Southeast returns to the track on Friday for the Pine Bluffs Invitational. Field events begin at 9 a.m. and action on the track kicks off at 11 a.m.
“We will have everybody back this week,” Bullington said after missing several athletes because of spring break. “There is not a lot of weeks left until we get to regionals, so we are running out of time to pre-qualify.”
