TORRINGTON – The Cubs rallied after trailing 10-4 heading into the sixth inning to force extras, snagging an 11-10 win in the Little League city tournament championship game Wednesday.
The Cubs’ bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth, with Mac Hibben, Ryder Hackbarth, Bryce Hager, Alyssa Albaugh, Ty Albaugh and Zabdiel Munoz all came across to score in the frame. Hager hit a three-run moon shot in the inning to help propel the Cubs’ rally.
The game was tied at 10 after the sixth inning, forcing the game to go to extras. In the top of the seventh, the Yankees were unable to plate any runners, opening the door for the Cubs. Emmett Coxbill took the plate with two runners on base. His single allowed Hackbarth to come around and score for the walk-off win.
The Yankees also had a late serge leading up the sixth-inning magic. To open the contest, Ayden Desmond, Tyler Bennick and Ben Firminhac all scored in the first inning, with Hibben and Hackbarth scoring in the bottom of the inning, giving the Yanks a 3-2 lead. Matthew Keene came around to score for the Cubs in the second, putting the game at 3-3, before Bennick added another run in the third for the Yanks. Keene scored his second run of the night in the fourth inning, bringing the score to 4-4.

In the fifth, Desmond, Firminhac, Justin Clayton and Mateo Correa all came around to score. Desmond and Firminhac both score their third runs of the game in the top of the sixth, giving the Yankees their 10-4 lead that would later be erased.
The Cubs won their first city championship since 1996. Manager R.B. Hackbarth put a plate with his name on it on the city trophy for the first time in his coaching career. The Cubs were the No. 4 seed entering the tournament, but got hot at the right time to finish atop the league.
To settle third and fourth places, the Cardinals and Cubs met Wednesday. Wyler Fisher scored the first run of the game, putting the Mets up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals immediately rebounded with Brady Cook and Kealy Carson each scoring in the bottom of the first.
Griffin Wolfe added to the Cardinals lead, scoring in the second inning. Austin Short and Keyan Sargent scored in the top of the third to tie the game at 3, before Nolan Long and Carson Schultz scored in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. Cook scored his second run of the game in the fourth inning to put the Cards up 6-3.
In the fifth, Sargent, Dawson McFadden and Matthew Hellus scored back-to-back-to-back runs for the Mets to knot the game at six. The Mets were blanked in the top of the sixth inning, bringing the Cardinals back to the plate. Carson started the bottom of the sixth with a lead-off double and Schultz was able to bring Carson home for a walk-off win, sealing third.
The Torrington Little League regular season has concluded. The all-star rosters were finalized after press time. The two local all-star teams will look to defend their home territory when Torrington hosts the district tournament July 17-21.
