GOSHEN COUNTY – A tragic motor vehicle accident claimed the life of Torrington High School graduate Tyler Schaub and left another Torrington High School graduate, Samantha Hill, in the hospital under critical care.

The accident occurred the morning of Saturday, March 6, after Schaub’s vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with Hill’s vehicle. Schaub was pronounced dead at the scene while Hill was flown in a helicopter to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb.

The caring hearts of Torrington and Goshen County have come together to help the families. AJ’s Soda Shop announced they would be donating 25% of their sales on Tuesday, March 9, to the families of Hill and Schaub.

An outpouring of support was clearly shown by the community when a line of vehicles was observed along Highway 26/85 all throughout the day, Tuesday. Vehicles stacked up in the AJ’s parking lot and parked along the side of the highway as they waited to aid the families and get refreshments. Several local businesses donated to AJ’s and customers were offered free drinks in support of the donation efforts.

A heart-wrenching Facebook video from AJ’s Soda Shop informed the area they had received $8,594 in cash donations at their window. As part of their campaign, 25% of the day’s sales amounted to $1,230.59. Being as they were so close to $10,000, AJ’s Soda Shop filled the gap and will donate $5,000 to each family affected by the tragedy.

In addition to AJ’s Soda Shop, the Open Barrel Brewing Company has also announced on Facebook they will be having a prime rib benefit dinner March 19 from 6-10 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Hill family. The dinners start at 6 p.m. with a live Jazz band at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Open Barrel Brewery or Torrington Office Supply. Tickets are $30 apiece.
