Community Oil Change Day

TORRINGTON – Current Torrington High School automotive students will offer free oil changes on Tuesday, May 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the THS Automotive Shop. Vehicle owners must supply the oil and filters. The event is first-come, first-serve. Call (307) 532-7101 ext. 4662 or email lwostenberg@goshen1.org for an appointment. Donations are acceptable and will go toward SkillsUSA competition.

Annual Iris Show announced

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center north of Scottsbluff will be alive with blooming flowers June 1-2 for the annual Monument Valley Iris Society show and sale.

Members of MVIS will be providing most of the entries again this year, with the help of the public. Anyone who raises iris is invited to enter, but to qualify for judging, individuals must know the name of the variety they’re entering. Entries with unknown names will be placed for voting by the viewing public only.

Entries will be accepted 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, and judging begins promptly at 10 a.m. The show will be open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Iris rhizomes will be available for purchase again this year, both in the show building and at the garden site outside. Catalogues of photos from member gardens will also be available.

Attendance at the show and sale is free and is open to the public.

AAUW to host concert fundraiser

TORRINGTON – The Torrington/Wheatland branch of the American Association of University Women is partnering with the Eastern Wyoming Arts Council to host a special concert and fundraiser to help raise money for AAUW scholarships.

Swiss/French acoustic guitarist Claude Bourbon will be the featured artist for an afternoon concert, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, in the CTEC Commons at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington. Bourbon will present a selection of medieval and Spanish blues during the event, featuring tea and light refreshments.

Madelon Daniels, co-president of the local #AAUW branch, said, “We welcome this opportunity to partner with the Eastern Wyoming Arts Council and thank the Council for bringing this musical event to Torrington.”

Bourbon is no stranger to Torrington where he performed in 2014 and in Scottsbluff, Neb., in 2013. To learn more about Bourbon visit www.claudebourbon.org.

Quilting camp to be offered

TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Quilters will host a camp this summer designed to share their love of the artform with the next generation.

“Kids Learn to Quilt” for youth age 9 to 17 is scheduled 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 17 to 20, in the Community Room at Platte Valley Bank, Main Street, in Torrington. Cost for the camp is $25 and all fabric will be provided.

Participants will learn the basics of quilting and will produce a lap-sized quilt in colors of their choice during the camp. No sewing experience is required.

A limited number of partial scholarships to cover the cost of the camp are available. For more information, or to obtain a registration form, call Terry Haines at (307) 532-5221. Registration forms are also available at elementary school offices.

Deadline to apply for “Kids Learn to Quilt” camp is June 1. The class is limited to 15 students.

Hell Gap explorations to resume

GOSHEN COUNTY – Area residents and visitors will get a chance to return to pre-historic times at a local National Historic Landmark this summer.

The Summer 2019 field school will run in three sessions: June 21-July 1, July 6-15, July 20-29. Hell Gap is located northeast of Guernsey on Whalen Canyon Road.

The Field School will be open to graduate and under-graduate students, who will learn field technique, electronic- and digital-date recording and more. The school will also host workshops on lithics, zooarchaeolgoy, stone tool making, atl-atl throws and public education. The sessions will include an open house the weekend of July13, with site tours, atl-atl throwing competitions, and flint knapping demonstrations, including the talents of Bruce Bradley.
