National Day of Prayer

TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Courthouse grounds will play host again this year to the National Day of Prayer observance.

Interested parties are asked to gather on the south lawn of the courthouse along East 20th Avenue at 12 p.m. Thursday, May 3, for the annual observance. Prayer topics will include government, the military, media, businesses, education, youth and the family.

The modern National Day of Prayer was authorized by Congress in 1952.

USAF Offutt Brass band to perform

TORRINGTON – Offutt Brass, the brass ensemble from the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band, will perform at the Eastern Wyoming College Performing Arts Center, 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 7.

The six-member ensemble, stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, is comprised of two trumpets, French horn, trombone, tuba and percussion.  With a wide musical variety of classical, jazz, popular, and patriotic favorites, Offutt Brass showcases the Air Force’s excellence, precision and innovation in every performance. These talented musicians proudly represent the more than 313,000 Air Force professionals around the world who relentlessly protect and defend the freedoms we cherish.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Local artists sought

TORRINGTON – The Southeast Wyoming Art Association is seeking artists for participation in its annual show here.

Interested artists may bring their artwork for consideration for the show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, to The Loft at 2042 Main Street in Torrington. Entry fee for professional, advanced amateur and amateur divisions is $7 per entry and teen division, $4 per entry. 

Categories include oil/acrylic, water color/mixed media, drawing (including pencil/charcoal/colored pencil and etching), sculpture and any others not listed. There is no limit on the number of entries per artist. 

All entries must be original work, not shown previously and created within the last three years. Two-dimensional pieces must be framed with suitable hangers and artist identification on the back.

Cash prizes will be awarded in each category within the divisions. In addition, gift certificates donated by local merchants will be awarded to entries selected by the
merchants

The group will host an opening reception, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, where the public may meet the judge, professional artist Tim Collins of Laramie, and view winning entries in the show. The show will remain open from Monday, May 7, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, through 12 p.m. Saturday, May 12. Artists may collect their entries from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday. 

GoCo Cattlewomen set meeting

TORRINGTON – Goshen CattleWomen will meet at 12 p.m. Friday, May 4 at Platte Valley Bank Community Room for a catered box lunch. Cost $10. Please call Donna Cay Heinz, (307) 532-3222, for reservations. 

The program will include installation of officers and Goshen County Make-It-With-Wool winners.

Benefit dinner

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Elks Lodge will host a benefit enchilada dinner this week for a local man battling cancer.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door for the Jack Bower Cancer Fund benefit, scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the lodge in Torrington. The event will also feature a silent auction as well as a “gift card table” for the fund.

USPS Fill-A-Bag

GOSHEN COUNTY – Local postal carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers, will host their annual Fill-A-Bag food drive this weekend.

Postal patrons are invited to fill bags with nonperishable food items and place them by their mailboxes on Saturday, May 12. Carriers will collect the bags during their regular routes that day. Food items donated will be delivered to local food banks and food pantries for distribution to families and individuals in need. 

Items needed include pasta, cereals, dry oatmeal and all canned goods, including beans, vegetables, fruit and soups. It is requested to avoid all glass containers in the donations.

Cirque excursion announced

TORRINGTON – Tickets are on sale now for a trip to see the show, Cirque du Solei Corteo, set for Saturday, June 2, at the Busweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colo.

Canadian company, Cirque du Solei, is the largest production entertainment company in the world. The show, Corteo – which translates from the Italian to “Procession” – follows the story of a clown as he imagines his funeral procession. A total of 51 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors portray the life and memories of the clown in an imaginary carnival setting.

The bus will leave the Eastern Wyoming College campus at 10 a.m. for the 3:30 p.m. show. Cost for the trip, hosted by the EWC Community Education office, is $70. Registration and payment deadline is May 10 by calling the Community Ed office at (307) 532-8213 or (307) 532-8323, or visiting in person on the campus at 3200 West C Street in Torrington.
