Easter Cantata comes to Torrington

TORRINGTON – Several local churches will be hosting the annual Community Easter Cantata, titled Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Director Joyce Willeke described the performance as a “more contemporary take” on the classic Easter cantata. Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, March 25, at First Wyoming Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Torrington. A second, public performance will also be presented, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, at the church, for those unable to attend the March 25 performance. 

A third, private performance is scheduled for the inmates of the Wyoming Medium Correctional Facility east of Torrington. The opportunity to perform there is a “real blessing,” Mrs. Willeke said.

With the exception of the correctional institution, all performances are free and open to
the public.

Historical Society program announced

TORRINGTON – Rick Ewig will be special guest speaker for a program this month, presented by the Goshen County Historical Society.

The program is set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 27, in the community room at Platte Valley Bank in Torrington. The program is free and the public is invited to attend.

Ewig will talk about his new book on Wyoming’s capital city, Cheyenne: A Sesquicentennial History, covering the more than 150-year history of the community that’s served as the cornerstone for industry, tourism, military history and politics for the state. The program will touch on the impacts these issues have had state wide.

Ewig retired in 2016 after serving 19 years as associate director of the American Heritage center at the University of Wyoming. He is a past president of the Wyoming State Historical Society and has edited the Annals of Wyoming magazine since the late 1980s.

‘Way We Worked’ grand closing set

TORRINGTON – The Homesteaders Museum here will play host to a “Grand Closing” presentation to bid farewell to the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service show, The Way We Worked.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the museum, 495 Main Street, in Torrington. Author and inspirational speaker Preethi Fernando of Loveland, Colo., will talk about “Amazing Women” during the event. Fernando is the author of 17 Women Who Shook the World.

Scholarship deadline approaching

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – April 1 is the next deadline to file applications for a variety of scholarships offered by the Oregon Trail Community Foundation here.

OTCF annual awards dozens of scholarships to high school and college students around the Panhandle and eastern Wyoming region. In 2017, the Foundation award some $85,000 in regional scholarships.

Library Spring Sale

TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Library Foundation will host its annual Spring Book Sale, April 7 – 21, at the Goshen County Library Annex at 2017 East A St. in Torrington.

Sale hours will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. A variety of quality used books will be on sale, full price, from April 7 to April 14. Shoppers will get the opportunity of “fill-a-bag” with books from among the unsold selections from April 16 – 21.

Kinder pre-registration announced

TORRINGTON – Pre-registration for kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year at Lincoln Elementary School is set for 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 through Thursday, April 12, at the school.

Registration packets may be picked up at the Lincoln School office, 1402 East P St., prior to the registration dates. Parents need to present a certified birth certificate and immunizations records at the time of registration. 

Students must be five-years-old or older on or before Sept. 15 to register for kindergarten.

Mobile Food Pantry in Torrington

GOSHEN COUNTY – Torrington will host the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies Mobile Food Pantry from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 16 at the Pavilion on the Goshen County Fairgrounds.

There are no qualifications required to participate in the food pantry distribution.

Volunteers are needed for two shifts, from 1 to 4 p.m. for setup and distribution and 4 to 7 p.m., for distribution and to assist with cleanup. To sign up in advance to volunteer, please go online to www.signupgenius.com/go/5080548afad29a6f58-april1.

Job Expo returns to EWC

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College will host its annual Job Expo, set for Tuesday, April 17, in the Petsch Center Gymnasium on the campus in Torrington.

Gear Up Color Run announced

TORRINGTON – The Gear Up club at Eastern Wyoming College will again host a 5K Color Run for the community.

This year’s run is set to kick off at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 28. Runners are asked to meet at the CTEC Building on the EWC campus
in Torrington. 

Entrance fees are $20 for individual runners and $40 for teams of as many as three runners. Teams with four or more runners can register for $60, with a $5 per person surcharge for each runner on teams of five or more. Registration forms are available at the EWC information center, the Gear Up office or at the campus Fitness Center.

Sponsorship proceeds will go toward funding scholarships for Gear Up students
attending EWC.

Author, family to share oral history

TORRINGTON – Surviving members of the family of Native American icon Crazy Horse will be sharing their family’s oral history during a program in May at the Goshen County Library.

Floyd Clown and Doug War Eagle will be accompanied by South Dakota author William Matson for the program, scheduled for 5 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. Matson is the author of the book, Crazy Horse: The Lakota Warrior’s Life and Legacy based on the oral history of the family of the Lakota warrior.

Matson, Clown and War Eagle will be discussing and signing copies of their book during the program.
