Scholarship raffle

GOSHEN COUNTY – The Goshen County Homemakers are holding a Baby Quilt Raffle to raise funds for a 4-H scholarship.

Tickets are $1 each and only l,300 tickets will be sold. The drawing is scheduled for April 9

Republican Women to meet

FORT LARAMIE – The Goshen County Republic Women’s group will host its annual Valentine’s Luncheon, beginning at 11:30 a.m., today (Friday, Feb. 22) at The Gathering Place in Fort Laramie.

Lunch will be $16.95 per person. RSVP is requested to Maxine at (307) 532-3849 by Feb. 19.

Square dance

GERING, Neb. – The Oregon Trail Dance Club will host its regular dance from 7 to 9 p.m. today (Friday, Feb. 22) at the IOOF Hall in Gering with Lucky calling. PLUS dancing will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

The club will also host a dance from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, at the old 4-H building in Kimball, Neb., with caller Roger Schappell. Prerounds with Luck will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Smithsonian exhibit at Legacy museum

GERING, Neb. – The Legacy of the Plains museum will play host to a Museum on Main Street traveling exhibit, opening Saturday, Feb. 23.

Water/Ways explores the water cycle, water’s effect on the landscape, settlement and migration and its impact on culture and spirituality, according to a press release. One goal of the exhibit, which is specifically designed for small-town museums, is to serve to start conversations about the impact water has on American culture.

Legacy of the Plains will develop a complementary exhibit, host public programs and more in increase public understanding of the importance of water. The exhibit and special programs are free and open to the public and run through April 12.

Water/Ways is part of the Museum on Main Street program of the Smithsonian Institution, a partnership with national, state and local groups to bring exhibitions and exhibits to rural areas. To learn more about Water/Ways, visit www.museumonmainstreet.org or call the museum at (308) 436-1989.

Livestock industry topic of presentation

TORRINGTON – The Goshen County Historical Society will be holding its February meeting with the topic “The Evolution of the Livestock Industry in the State of Wyoming.”

Hugh Hageman will be the presenter. The meeting is set for 7 p.m., Feb. 26, at the Platte Valley Bank Community Room, Torrington.

Hageman is a fourth-generation rancher whose ancestors were instrumental in settling Wyoming and building the agriculture industry into what it is today. He currently ranches west of Ft. Laramie on his cow/calf operation with his wife, Lee, and their two sons and families.

All interested community members are invited to attend and become members of the historical society.

Conservancy program set

LINGLE – Bob Smith, of Platte River Basin Environments, will be the featured speaker for a program set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Western History Center in Lingle.

Conservancy in the Wild Cat Hills and Along the Platte River is the title of Smith’s planned presentation. Platte River Basin Environments is 501(c) (3) not-for-profit corporation formed through a bequest challenging a group of western Nebraska sportsmen to address deteriorating wildlife habitat and natural areas in the North Platte River Basin.

Western History Center is located five miles west of Lingle on U.S. Hwy. 26. The public is invited to attend.

Cattlewomen to meet

TORRINGTON - Goshen Cattlewomen will meet at 12 p.m. Friday, March 1 in the Brand Room of the Rendezvous Center, Goshen County Fairgrounds. A catered box lunch will cost $10. 

There will be an overview on issues facing the cattle industry, including plant based and cell-based meats. Prairie Center will host the meeting. Please make reservations by Feb. 27 by calling Angie Chavez, (307) 532-4834.

Theology on Tap 

TORRINGTON – Christ Reformed Presbyterian Church, in conjunction with Open Barrel Brewing Co., will host a series of monthly meetings, beginning in March.

Thank God it’s Tuesday: Theology on Tap begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, and continues on the first Tuesday of each month. The event kicks off with a free book, Nature’s Case for God: A Brief Biblical Argument, by author and theologian John Frame. 

Frame’s book argues Christians are not limited to the Bible when learning about God and creation. The book discusses ways believers can learn about God from sources outside Biblical writings.

Kindergarten registration set

TORRINGTON – Preregistration for Lincoln Elementary kindergarten in Torrington is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 5 through Thursday, March 7. 

Registration packets may be picked up at the school office, 1402 East P St., prior to registration. Parents are required to present a certified birth certificate to document the student is five-years-old on or before Sept. 15, 2019, and the student’s immunization records.

L-FL kindergarten registration

LINGLE – Preregistration for kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year at Lingle-Fort Laramie Elementary School will be Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 8. 

Preregistration forms are available from the elementary school office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, when school is in session. Completed forms may be dropped off between 7:15 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 7:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. 

To register, children must be five years of age on or before Sept. 15. Immunization records and a certified birth certificate are required to complete registration.

USAF musicians perform in Torrington

TORRINGTON – Members of the U.S. Air Force Concert Band and the “Singing Sergeants” group, both from Washington, D.C., will be in Torrington for their only Wyoming stop, part of a planned nine-day tour, in March.

The groups will perform a free concert, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9, on the Fine Arts Auditorium stage at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington. Ticket information is available at www.music.af.mil.

The Concert Band and Singing Sergeants are two of six performing ensembles which are part of the overall U.S. Air Force Band. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, the groups honors those who have served while inspiring “heightened patriotism and service,” according to a press release.

Disney on Ice bus trip

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College Community Education will host a bus trip to see Disney on Ice Worlds of Enchantment on Saturday, March 30.

Enter the world of Disney magic, featuring four favorite Disney stories. See Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the Disney/Pixar Cars race across the ice. Dive into the undersea world with Ariel in the Little Mermaid’s kingdom. Experience the adventures of Buzz, Woody, and the Toy Story gang as they race for home. Join sisters Anna and Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff from Disney’s Frozen as they learn true love comes from within. 

Attendees will see the 11 a.m. showing and then enjoy a buffet lunch at the Golden Corral. The Disney on Ice shows sell out quickly, but we have a limited number of guaranteed seats.

The $60 cost of this trip includes show ticket, bus ride and lunch. The bus will leave EWC at 7 a.m. and return around 5 p.m.
