TORRINGTON – Southeast senior Emily Buchanan put pen to paper last week, sign a letter of intent to become a Lancer in the fall and play for the Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team.
“It’s really close to home and I’ve watched them since I’ve grown up,” Buchanan said of her choice to play for EWC. “It’s nice to be able to continue my basketball career.”
Throughout her time as a Lady Cyclone, Buchanan experienced success. In 2015 and 2016, reaching the 2A state basketball championship with the Southeast girls both years. Last year, Southeast fell to Pine Bluffs 50-40 in the championship game. As a sophomore, Buchanan was on the team that fell to Lyman in the title game, 42-36.

During this past campaign, Buchanan was the only senior for the Lady Cyclones team that won the consolation championship at the state tournament. The Buchanan-led Lady Cyclones fell in their first game of the tournament to Rocky Mountain, 44-38, before bouncing back to beat Lovell (41-29) and Greybull (47-35) to win the consolation title.
Buchanan stepped up in the big games for Southeast. She averaged 17 points, eight rebounds and one assist per game in Casper this past winter. In the consolation championship against Greybull, Buchanan racked up 16 points and eight boards, while staying on the floor for 31:31, the most time spent on the court for any girl in the game.
Buchanan’s efforts did not go unnoticed, as she was named all-state for the second season in a row. She was a unanimous selection for the all-state recognition as both a junior and senior.
“I feel like I bring great work ethic and am able to do all that is asked of me,” Buchanan said of what she can offer to the Lady Lancers.
Buchanan is leaving a Lady Cyclone team that went 20-9 last winter and is joining a Lady Lancer team that went 22-12 and finished runner-up in the Region IX Tournament.
