TORRINGTON – Both the Eastern Wyoming College men’s and women’s basketball teams advanced to the second round of the Region IX playoffs.
On Friday, the women hosted Western Wyoming Community College, ending their season with an 87-77 victory.
The Lady Lancers scored at least 20 points in each quarter to slowly pull away from WWCC over the course of the 40-minute game.
The EWC women had five players in double-figures. Freshman McKenzie Becker tallied a team-high 18 points coming off the bench, while sophomore Emily Buchanan added 16. Sophomore Ines Salat Margarit and freshman Paula Martinez Sanz scored 12 apiece, while sophomore Nicole Cutler tossed in 10.
The Lady Lancers connected on 17 of 27 free throws, while Western Wyoming went a perfect 8 for 8.
The men’s team also faced Western Wyoming, but on the road, in Rock Springs.
The Lancers defeated the Mustangs 63-49. No stats were available at press time.
The women will face McCook Community College in the second round of the Region IX Tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb., while the men travel to Sheridan to face Western Nebraska Community College. Both games are slated to begin at 3 p.m. Thursday.
