Blazers upset No. 2 Douglas in thriller

TORRINGTON – Three Blazers scored in double-digits as the Torrington boys’ basketball team staved off No. 2-ranked Douglas at home on Friday, 52-51.
The Blazers led by as much as 16 points in the first half, but they let that big lead dwindle to a 39-30 advantage at intermission. At the end of the third frame, Torrington was up 46-39. With 40 seconds remaining, Torrington had the ball and a 52-51 lead. They managed to hold on for the win.
Jordan Malm and Bryan Lemmon led the Blazers, with 13 points each. Malm nailed 4-of-8 from behind the arc and Lemmon shot 5-of-9 from the field. Malm also led the Blazers with 10 boards and six assists. Lemmon chipped in three rebounds, five assists and two steals as well.
Nathan Stitt also finished in double-digits, with 11 points. He hit a three-pointer, to go along with 3-of-5 shooting from inside the arc. Stitt also accounted for four rebounds and two steals. Ryan Johnson, with six, and Tyler Ring, with five, rounded out the top scorers for Torrington. The two combined for 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
As a team, Torrington shot 41 percent from the field, including hitting 7-of-16 from behind the arc. The Blazers did leave six points at the charity stripe, where they shot 7-of-13.


Gering 90, Torrington 62
In previous season action, the Blazers were outmatched when they hit the road to take on Gering, Neb., on Thursday, despite having four players in double-digits in the 90-62 loss.
Ring led the Blazers, with 16 points. He knocked down all three of his three-point attempts and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. The senior shot 1-of-4 from inside the arc, had one rebound, three assists and a steal.
Stitt turned in another 11-point performance on 5-of-9 shooting. Malm and Johnson each had 10 points. Johnson knocked down 5-of-6 from the field, and Malm hit 3-of-10, with two of those shots coming from deep. Stitt led Torrington in steals, with three, to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Johnson and Malm combined for five boards, four assists and a steal.
Lemmon led the Blazers in rebounds, with four, and tied for the team-lead in assists, with three. Lemmon had one of Torrington’s two blocks, with the other coming from Breyden Bivens.
Led by Ring’s perfect shooting from deep, Torrington shot 44 percent from behind the arc. The Blazers shot 42 percent from inside the arc. They did shoot better from the free-throw line, hitting 11-of-16.
After the upset win, the Blazers are sitting at 9-4 on the season, with an undefeated mark in the conference. They hit the road on Friday to take on Worland, starting at 7 p.m. Torrington also plays Hot Springs on Saturday at 2 p.m.
