Blazers receiving votes in preseason hoops poll

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Blazers boys basketball team received two second-place votes, one third-place vote and a pair of fifth-place votes in the Preseason Coaches and Media Poll released Wednesday morning.

However, it wasn’t enough for the Blazers to crack the top five in the first 3A poll of the season as Torrington is six points behind fifth place Newcastle.

Defending class champions, the Buffalo Bison, top the poll with 11 of the 14 first-place votes. Rawlins is second, while Lander Valley comes in third. Those two schools received the other three first-place votes. Worland is fourth.

Torrington joins Pinedale and Douglas as the other two schools on the outside looking in.

The Blazers open the season on Saturday, Dec. 8 at home against Chadron, Neb. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

In Class 2A and 1A, Southeast and Lingle-Fort Laramie didn’t pick up any votes.

Pine Bluffs tops the Class 2A poll, while Wind River, Wyoming Indian, Wright and Big Horn round out the top five.

The Cyclones travel south to the Burns Winter Classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.

In Class 1A, each team ranked in the top five got at least one first-place vote.

Burlington topped the list with three. Farson-Eden and Upton received two each to come in second and third, respectively. Encampment was fourth and Kaycee fifth.

The Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers open the season at the Burns Winter Classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.
