TORRINGTON – For the second consecutive year, the Torrington High School Speech and Debate Team hosted the Eastern Wyoming Speech and Debate Tournament last weekend.  This year, the two-day open-invitation competition held at Torrington High School hosted four teams from Wyoming and more than 70 student competitors for the competition on March 2 and 3.  Sweepstakes award plaques, crafted by Charles Richter and woodworking students at THS, were distributed to first place schools: Cheyenne East High School (4A), Newcastle High School (3A), and Niobrara County High School (1A/2A).

Tournament Director and Torrington High School Forensics Head Coach, Lyle Wiley, described the tournament, featuring 11 Speech and Debate events over four rounds of competition, as “a team effort.”

Wiley credited the Torrington community for much of the tournament’s success. More than 60 judges from around the community offered time and expertise, judging in more than 90 spots, to keep the tournament running smoothly and offer constructive feedback to student competitors.

“The hardest part of running a tournament like this is getting committed community judges for the events,” he said. “We were fortunate to have so many individuals step up to help out with these judging

responsibilities.”

Speech and Debate Team members from throughout Goshen County assisted with running the tournament, working the ballot tables, keeping the judge hospitality room stocked with food and refreshments, working concessions, assisting judges and competitors in navigating the high school to find rounds and return ballots, and announcing the winners of competitions at the close of the tournament.  THS Assistant Speech and Debate Coach, Zach Bearnson, said team members were “efficient and professional throughout.”

Wiley acknowledged a number of people who helped the tournament run smoothly, including the administrative team at Torrington High School, the maintenance crew, his assistant coaches, members of Gleaner’s Union and supporters who brought food, and the wider Speech and Debate community.

“These tournaments only work if you have a team of people coming together and helping each other out,” Wiley said. “We are grateful to all those that helped this tournament run smoothly and successfully.”

The Speech and Debate Team will close out their season this week at the Wyoming High School State Speech and Debate Tournament at Lander.

“It has been a special season for a wonderful group of hard working students,” Wiley said. “Hopefully, we can carry that momentum into State for a
big finish.”
