Blazers dismantle Wheatland in opener

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Trailblazer football team exploded for 56 points, while allowing only six in a wide margin of victory Friday against Wheatland in their first game of the season.
The Blazers got things started early, with a pass from Breyden Bivens to Nathan Stitt for a seven-point lead less than three minutes into the game. Torrington forced a three-and-out on Wheatland’s possession and Stitt blocked the punt. Bivens capped off the Torrington drive with a one-yard touchdown pass.
“It was nice that we were able to get off to a fast start, scoring right away and then forcing a three-and-out and blocking a punt,” coach Mark Lenhardt said. “It helped with the first-game nerves.”
The Blazers closed out the first quarter with two additional touchdowns, a three-yard run by Josh Posten and a 60-yard reception by Stitt, his second touchdown of the game.
After scoring 28 points in the first quarter, things slowed down in the second. Posten scored his second touchdown of the game, while Bryan Lemmon added another, with his coming from 20 yards out. Lemmon scored again after intermission and Torrington cruised to a 56-6 win, with Wheatland’s score coming late in the game.
“Everything did kind of click but our main thing is to always take what the defense gives us and we were able to do that well,” Lenhardt said of the high offensive output. “When you’re able to take what the defense gives you, it’s a great thing.”

On offense, Torrington was balanced between run (165 yards) and pass (143 yards).
“Hopefully we can continue to do that,” Lenhardt said. “We will continue to work on being good at both pass and run.”
Lemmon accounted for 118 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Posten toted the rock only four times for 28 yards, but he scored on two of those carries. Bivens added the final rushing touchdown.
Through the air, Stitt amassed 88 yards on four receptions, two of which were for touchdowns. Lemmon had 26 receiving yards, while Bo Moorehouse and Cade Schwartzkopf combined to chip in 29. Bivens went 8-for-9 in the aerial attack, racking up 143 yards and two passing touchdowns.
Stitt racked up the most defensive points for Torrington, with 13. On top of his two receiving touchdowns, the senior found the end zone on a pick-six. His blocked punt also helped contribute to his defensive points.
“I think Nathan Stitt obviously had a good game,” Lenhardt said. “Anytime somebody makes and impact in all three phases of the game, you have to tip your hat to them.”
Jacob Wamboldt was just behind Stitt on defense, accounting for eight tackles and a sack. Matthew Garcia added seven tackles, while Josh Kingsley kicked in two tackles and two sacks. Schwartzkopf and Ryan Johnson combined for four tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception.
“I thought defensively we worked well together as a whole,” Lenhardt said. “When we were in position, our guys really made good plays.”
The Blazers take their 1-0 record on the road this week, making the haul to Star Valley on Friday. The Braves, the 2016 state champions, won their Week 1 game against Preston, Idaho, 28-14.
“I’m looking for us to go out and compete and be physical,” Lenhardt said. “I feel like this is a great opportunity for our guys to get on the road and face a quality opponent. Win or lose, this game won’t make or break a season – ours or Star Valley’s.”
