Blazer wrestling third at Wheatland Quad

WHEATLAND – The Torrington High School wrestling team went 1-2 at the Wheatland Quad on Friday.

The Blazers opened the day with a pair of losses to Newcastle/Upton and Moorcroft but ended the day with a win over Saratoga.

In the first match of the day, Newcastle/Upton defeated Torrington 51-6.

The lone points of the match went to 220 pounder Sam Sorenson as Newcastle/Upton was open at the weight.

Over the remainder of the dual, Newcastle/Upton won five weights by fall and one by decision. Torrington was open at the other three weights.

In the second round, the Blazers came up short against the Moorcroft Wolves 54-30.

Sorenson gave Torrington a 6-0 lead at an open 285 pounds, but Moorcroft scored seven straight wins, including three pins and four forfeit weights.

At 152 pounds, freshman Bryce Hager snapped the streak with a 49 second fall, while Marcos Martinez and Logan Sandusky also picked up wins. At 220 pounds, Rhiley Grubbs got an open win to conclude the dual.

In the final dual of the day, Torrington scored its second dual win of the season with a 36-24 win over Saratoga.

Riley Duffield (132 pounds), Martinez, Sandusky, Sam Birdsall (195), Grubbs and Sorenson got wins for the Blazers.

Torrington will return to the mats on Saturday at the Rawlins Duals to wrap up the regular season. Action gets underway at 11 a.m. The Blazers will wrestle Rawlins, Pinedale and Riverton.
