State tournament set for Friday and Saturday in Casper

NEWCASTLE – The Torrington High School wrestling team qualified seven members to this weekend’s Wyoming High School Activities Association State Championships in Casper.

Barrett Eichenberger (120 pounds), Reece Grubbs (126), Michael Sandusky (138), Kaden Romig (138), Bryce Hager (160), Matthew Hellus (170) and Sam Birdsall (182) advanced to state, placing in the top eight at this weekend’s 3A East Regional Tournament in Newcastle.

Sandusky led the Blazers with a fourth-place finish in the 138-pound bracket. After losing in the quarterfinals to Worland’s Kyle Anderson, Sandusky won three straight matches by fall to reach the third-place match. In the final match, Anderson defeated Sandusky for a second time by fall.

Hager and Eichenberger finished fifth. Both wrestlers went 2-2 on the weekend, while Birdsall was sixth and Hellus seventh. Grubbs and Romig rounded out the THS qualifiers with an eighth-place finish in their respective weight classes.

As a team, Torrington finished eighth in the final team standings with 28 points. Douglas won the regional championship with 247 points, while Worland was second with 181.5 points. Rawlins was third with 178.5.

The state tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m. with the first round and continues Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the third round of wrestle-backs at the Wyoming Ford Center in Casper.
