DOUGLAS – The Torrington High School wrestling team traveled to Douglas for the first tournament of 2022 with the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament.

None of the five Blazer varsity wrestlers placed.

At 160 pounds, Matthew Hellus was the lone Torrington varsity wrestling to score a victory on the weekend.

After a bye in the opening round, Hellus was pinned by Lane Ewing of Douglas in the second round, but Hellus battled back to score a fall of his own over Jacob Prell of Newcastle/Upton. Hellus saw his weekend come to an end in the fourth round of consolation wrestle-backs with a loss to Giovanni Lucchi of Kelly Walsh.

Tyler Nicolay, Reece Grubbs, Michael Sandusky and Bryce Hager all went 0-2 for the weekend.

As a team, the Blazers scored four points for the weekend, placing 25th in the team standings.

In the junior varsity ranks, Barrett Eichenberger won the 118-122-pound division with a 4-1 record. In his final match, Eichenberger defeated Kelly Walsh’s Caleb Elton by a 7-4 decision.

In the 127-133-pound division, Hunter Massie also finished his day with a win, picking up a second-period pin over Glenrock’s Jake Coziahr in the third-place match. Massie finished the weekend 2-3.

Torrington also had three grapplers finish fourth, including Griffin Wolfe (126-127 pounds), Kaden Romig (142-147) and Brian Garcia (150-159). Wolfe had a record of 2-3, while Romig went 3-2. Garcia went 2-3.

In the 150-154-pound class, Jairod Anderson finished seventh, going 2-3, including a pin over Hulett’s Delainie Munch in the seventh-place match.

The Blazers are back in action Saturday at the Blazer Duals, along with Glenrock, Burns/Pine Bluffs Niobrara County and Newcaslte/Upton. Action gets underway at 10 a.m., and the Duals also marks the final home competition of the season for the Torrington wrestlers.
