Blazer tracksters take second in Newcastle

NEWCASTLE – The Torrington Trailblazers boys’ and girls’ track teams both finished second as a team at the Laura Chord Memorial Invitational in Newcastle on Thursday.

The Blazer boys racked up 133 team points to finish second behind Douglas, who racked up 138.5 points.

Logan Harris racked up 20 points of his own, earning the top spot in both discus (145 feet, 1 inch) and shot put (59 feet, six inches). Harris’ effort in the shot put is a new state record.

Jacob Wambolt picked up a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 5 inches, while Nathaniel Woodruff finished sixth, recording a throw of 41 feet, 1.5 inches. Aaron Loya (11th, 37 feet, 10 inches), Victor Gomez (18th, 34 feet, 1 inch) and Corbin Harris (30th, 31 feet) rounded out the top competitors in the shot put.

In the discus, Harris was the only Blazer to rack up points. Woodruff took ninth (115 feet, 1 inch) and Wambolt finished 13th (102 feet, 3.5 inches). Loya, Gomez and Brandon Bennick filled in the top-five discus throwers for the Blazers.

In other field events for Torrington, Casey Britton took first in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches. Dylan Waller had the best finish among long jumpers, taking third with a 15 foot, 1 inch effort. Jesse Lay took sixth in the triple jump, clearing 34 feet, 0.5 inches. Three Torrington boys placed in the pole vault. Gavin Garner took the silver (12 feet), Jared Spencer finished fifth (11 feet) and Trey Rodriguez came in at eighth (10 feet).

On the track, Pake Haun clocked an 11:43.26 to take second in the two-mile. Chance Newman competed in the same event, taking sixth with a time of 12:40.88. In the 1,600-meter run, Josh Posten finished eighth with a time of 5:18.69. Aaron Borger took the crown in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:11.72.

In the sprints, Bo Moorehouse took third (12.41 seconds) and Tristan DeMott finished fifth (14.55 seconds) in the 100-meter dash. Brett Posten (11th), Cade Schwartzkoft (17th), Brice Krick (19th) and Waller (20th) all turned in solid performances in the shortest sprint.

Moorehouse also took third in the 200-meter dash, turning in a time of 24.70. Frank Rand took fifth with a time of 25.25 and DeMott finished eighth with a time of 25.43. In the 400-meter dash, Moorehouse stood atop the podium at the end of the day, taking first with a time of 54.09.

Krick was the best Blazer boy in the hurdles. He took fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (44.51 seconds) and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (18.76 seconds). Lay also competed in the 300-meter hurdles, taking 10th with a time of 48.80 seconds.

The relay team of Borger, Haun, Josh Posten and Cameron Juma had the best finish among the Torrington boys’ relays, taking second in the 4x800 with a time of 9:06.89. In the 4x100-meter relay, Rand, Posten, DeMott and Kevin Parish clocked a 47.70 to take third. Rand, Juma, Lay and Parish combined for a time of 3:53.32 in the 4x400-meter relay to take fourth.

In the women’s standings, Torrington amassed 99.5 team points, finishing second behind Custer, S.D., who had 146.5 points.

The Lady Blazers dominated the pole vault, taking four of the top eight spots. Nakalyn Garner took first, clearing 8 feet, 9 inches. Onalise Albaugh and Aubrey DeMott tied for the fourth spot with efforts of 7 feet, 3 inches. Sarandon Keeran tied for the seventh spot, eclipsing 6 feet, 9 inches.

In other field events, Renee Cline took first in the long jump, launching herself 14 feet, 7 inches. Dantia Palmer also placed, taking sixth with a 13 foot, 7.75 inch effort. Palmer overtook Cline in the triple jump, finishing third with a 31 foot, 2 inch jump. Cline settled for fifth after clearing 31 feet, 0.25 inches.

Rounding out the field events, Pamela Pierce had the best showing among the Lady Blazers in the two throwing events, taking eighth in discus (93 feet, 2 inches) and 22nd in shot put (25 feet, 10.5 inches). Tayte Rodriguez was just behind Pierce in the shot put, finishing 26th with a throw of 24 feet, 9.5 inches. Rodriguez also took 31st in discus (68 feet). Chloe Krick was in the top-three throwers for the Torrington girls, taking 28th in discus (69 feet, 2 inches) and 33rd in shot put (22 feet, 5 inches).

Albaugh had the best finish on the track for the Lady Blazers, taking second in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 1:06.98.

In the shorter sprints, Shelbey Prusia had a solid day. She finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.82 seconds) and third in the 200-meter dash (28.91 seconds). In the 100, Latosha Wiford was just behind Prusia, taking sixth with a time of 14.43 seconds. Katie Wiford placed 13th with a time of 14.97 seconds.

Five Lady Blazers ran in the 200-meter dash, and all of them placed in the top-16 among the 39 ladies that competed in the race. Prusia’s third-place finish paced the Lady Blazers, while Palmer still racked up some team points, finishing sixth (29.03 seconds). Albaugh and Latosha Wiford finished back to back at ninth and 10th, while Katie Wiford placed 16th.

Adia Sherbeyn paced the Torrington girls in the distance events, taking fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:40.03. Chrissy Lira competed in the same event, taking eighth after clocking 2:51.03. Brielle Bivens was the only Lady Blazer to compete in the mile, placing fifth with a time of 6:35.33.

Cheyenne Mickle was the only girl to run in the hurdles for Torrington. She placed 11th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 21.07 seconds. In the 300-meter hurdles, she finished 13th, clocking 1:01.46.

Two Lady Blazer relay teams took second. The team of Albaugh, Cline, Prusia and Latosha Wiford finished second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:39.03. Cline, Prusia and Katie and Latosha Wiford hooked up for a 54.42 second time in the 4x100-meter relay to take the silver.

The Blazers return to the track on Thursday for the Mitchell Invite in Mitchell, Neb. Field events are set to start at 11 a.m. and track events begin at 1 p.m.
