DOUGLAS – The Torrington Trailblazer boys soccer team picked up a 3-0 win on the road Tuesday against Douglas in the season opener, thanks in large part to Ethan Creagar’s two goals.

Creagar got the scoring started with a deep shot that found the back of the net in the 28th minute. Nathan Stitt added to the Torrington lead by scoring in the 37th minute, just before halftime. Creagar had his second goal come in the 49th minute, giving Torrington the 3-0 lead and the Blazers held on for the decisive victory. Devin Flores and Braeden Claussen each had an assist in the win.

“Ethan did an amazing job of creating passing lanes and holding his position,” coach Jeshua Arnusch said. “Both of his goals were well hit and he had some amazing juggles past our opponents. It is definitely nice to have him back and healthy this year.”

The Blazers had a strong offensive game, outshooting Douglas 24-9 in the shutout.

“We had a few balls bounce off of the frame and their goalie made some sweet saves that really kept them alive throughout the game,” Arnusch said.

With the first game of the year, the Blazers had new faces in new places, especially toward the back of the formation. Arnusch said he was impressed with Braeden Mechem, who stepped up in the back line.

“He did a great job of playing physical, sagging to the sweeper and winning the 50/50 balls,” Arnusch said. “He also did a great job of communicating with the new defense and helped us secure a shutout.”

Daedon Morrow stepped between the pipes for the first time this season, recording nine saves in the shutout.

As to be expected with the first game of the season, Arnusch saw a lot of room for improvement.

“I was impressed by the way that we passed the ball in our new triangle offense, but I definitely think we can work on our first touch and movement off the ball,” he said. “We also really need to work on our finishing and finding our forwards on our through balls, but we still have the entire season to improve on that.”

The Blazers took their 1-0 record into a home game Thursday against Scottsbluff, Neb., with the game concluding after press time. Torrington’s next matchup comes tonight (Friday) at home against Lander (0-2) with a 5 p.m. kickoff.

“Lander has always been our rival and we need to beat them to get a leg up in our quadrant race,” Arnusch said. “They are bringing back a few really talented players that will definitely make us respect their speed, dribbling skills and their ability to get behind defenses.”
