Blazer boys open season third at the Wheatland Invite

WHEATLAND – The Torrington High School golf team teed up the golf ball for the first time for the 2022 fall season on Thursday and Friday.

Senior and defending all-state golfer Gage Gibson paced the Blazer boys with a two-day total of 162. Gibson had an opening round of 83 on Thursday and broke into the 70s with a 79 on Friday. Gibson was 10 strokes behind tournament winner Caden Cunningham of Cheyenne Central.

Braeden Reid had a total of 182 with rounds of 86 and 96 to finish 19th, while Alex Warning had rounds of 95 and 89 to finish the weekend with a 184 and a 20th-place finish. Caleb Kelly had a 186 with rounds of 92 and 94, while Mason Wilkes fired a 97 and 98 for a 195.

As a team, the Blazers finished third with a 714. They were the highest finishing 3A school at the tournament. Cheyenne East won the team title with a 633, while Cheyenne Central was second with 645.

In the girls’ division, Madyson Banister led the Lady Blazers with a 220. She had rounds of 112 and 108 to finish tied for 11th. 

Kaleigh Waymire was 19 strokes back of her teammate with rounds of 122 and 117 to finish 15th with a 239. Kaylee Pittman had rounds of 128 and 119 for a two-day total of 247, while Madison Gibson fired rounds of 129 and 142 for a 271.

As a team, the Lady Blazers finished fifth with a team total of 706. Cheyenne Central won the team title with a 557, while Wheatland was second with 580. Laramie was third with 657.

The Torrington golf teams are back in action Thursday and Friday in Douglas.
