TORRINGTON – Funeral services for Betty Jean Johnson, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at the Torrington United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Wayland officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Betty died on Dec. 6, 2017, surrounded by her family, after a long bout with dementia. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association or the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Visitation will be Tuesday at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. The casket will be closed at the service. Betty was born the first of two children on Aug. 23, 1926, in Albia, Iowa, to Jennie and Viggo Rasmussen. She attended Albia High School, married Kenneth Johnson on July 7, 1946, and celebrated 71 years together in 2017.
She and Kenneth moved around quite a bit in the early years, settling in Torrington in 1957. She enjoyed traveling, and saw the lower 48 states from the back of a motorcycle. She also enjoyed walking with her good friend Dorothy, crocheting, line dancing and reading. She had three children: Terry the oldest, a daughter Theresa who lived just seven months, and another son, Michael. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1937 and belonged to the United Methodist Church in Torrington.
Betty is survived by her husband Kenneth and sons Terry and Michael, all of Torrington. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Theresa; and a brother, DeWayne
Rasmussen.
