Tigers begin season with double-header sweep

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Tigers 15-and-under baseball team started its summer season Saturday by hosting Douglas for a double-header, picking up two wins by wide margins.
In the first contest, Torrington racked up the runs early, taking a 21-1 lead before the second inning finished. The first contest was called after the opening three innings, with the Tigers picking up the 22-1 victory.
Douglas put up more of a fight in the second game, but Torrington still picked up the big win, 15-6.

“It was a pretty spread out effort at the plate,” assistant coach Ryan Kath said of the weekend.
On top of the firepower at the plate, the Tigers got a look at several of their pitches they hope to use throughout the season.
“We tried to rotate some pitchers so we can see different arms this early in the season,” Kath said. “Overall, I’m content with where we’re at. We just need to work on baserunning and some situational stuff.”
The Tigers now sit at 2-0 on the young season. They did have a double-header scheduled Sunday against Wheatland on the road, but that was postponed and the two teams are set to meet this week. Torrington returns to its original schedule after facing Wheatland to take on Gillette in a double-header Sunday, with the first game slated for 12 p.m.
