And the wind, she blows

Droughts are never easy.

We have been here before. Some of our friends have grass that didn’t have enough moisture to turn it green in the spring. Their cattle have eaten dry, hard, “fall grass” all summer. Now even that grass is gone.

I am picturing those cattle another year, as we prayerfully ask for moisture, taking their first taste of green, sweet grass. They take that bite and as cattle do, they grab and go quickly on to the next bite. Heads down, hurriedly grazing from bite to bite.

The herd picks up on the fact there is green grass and join the others. Their actions tell the others, “Hey, the good stuff is over here”.

Very similar things happen with our birds in the yard. No matter how hard I try to keep all three bird baths full, on occasion they will run dry. We had a persistent robin that flew into the birdbath several times. There was no drink, no bath, it was dry. She tried another birdbath with the same outcome.

After I noticed that we had a problem, I ran out and filled them all to the brim. It took only a few moments and here she came. Perfect landing, splash, and dunk. She repeated this several times. Each time she came back she brought friends. She couldn’t keep this information to herself, she spread the word. The birdbath drought was over.

Having lived through a drought on the ranch before, I know and understand that they can bring us to places in our lives that is only possible when going through a hard time. There is nothing, and I mean nothing that you and I can do to make it rain. You can hang every rattle snake you kill on the fence, you can run out and do a rain dance every morning before you begin your day, or we can take refuge in the one that makes the rain.

We won’t be in a drought forever. Our land will once again taste the sweet rain that a gracious heavenly father supplies. Our hay crop will once again take off and supply winter feed for our cattle. I know this because I have tasted and I have seen, and I want you to know, He is good.

Psalms 34:8...taste and see that the Lord is good...blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
