Torrington hosts top teams in multi-day event

TORRINGTON – This week, eight teams from across the state of Wyoming descended on Torrington’s Sports Complex for the 2018 American Legion ‘A’ State Baseball Tournament.

East Conference contenders include the Torrington Tigers, Cheyenne Hawks, Douglas Cats and Wheatland Lobos, while athletes representing the West Conference play for the Cody Cubs, Green River Knights, Lovell Mustangs and Riverton Raiders.

“We moved up from ‘B’ to ‘A’ this year – so to be able to host this level of a tournament … we have a great group of parents helping and lots of community involvement,” Kari Brafford, president of the Torrington Tigers Legion Program, said Wednesday. “I think it just shows a commitment from our board, players and community – that we’re interested in bringing baseball back in Torrington. We have many years of state titles and championship-winning teams, and we just want to bring our program back up to that.”

Sondra Dent, marketing and operations director for Goshen County Economic Development Corporation, said the tournament will likely provide a significant financial boost to the area.

“Of course, we always love to have big events held like (the Legion ‘A’ Tournament) in Torrington,” she said. “We’ve got such a great Sports Complex facility up there, and the event will have a huge impact on the economy of Torrington – visitors are staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, shopping at our stores, and buying gas and groceries here.”

Games began Wednesday and will wrap up Sunday, Aug. 5. A tournament family pass is available for $60, and individual daily passes for adults and children are $10 and $5 a day, respectively. Children under 10, veterans and senior citizens watch for free.

“We have concessions daily for the games, t-shirts, and I want to thank Banner Health for hosting the barbecue for us and also providing the athletic tent. We have a trainer here, which is great for all the teams,” Btafford said. “The championship game is Sunday at 11 (a.m.), we encourage all fans to come out and watch. Games times do change. Check our Facebook page (Torrington Tigers Baseball) for updates.”
