Lady Blazers battle ranked Douglas and Worland varsity squads

TORRINGTON – Conference play continued for the Torrington High School Lady Blazers with games against 3A rivals Douglas and Worland over the weekend.

The Douglas Lady Bearcats controlled the scoreboard in the first half against Torrington at the Old Wiseman Field on Friday, April 26, to establish a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Undaunted, the Lady Blazer defense slowed down the Douglas offense in the second half, holding the Lady Bearcats to five goals.

On Saturday, Torrington boarded the bus for an away game against the Worland Lady Warriors with Worland prevailing, 6-0.

“I am proud of the girls to have lost to Douglas, 15-0, on Friday and then be able to keep Worland, who is at the top of the conference, to a 6-0 score,” coach Tyler Cram said. “For our girls, it was a testament to their mental fortitude, positive mindset and work ethic. We of course have many areas to work on, which comes back to fundamentals and being more aggressive on the ball.”

Regardless of the tally on the scoreboard for the first half, both the Lady Blazer offense and defense made solid plays.

Junior Marisol Munoz led attacks into Lady Bearcat territory early in the first half with two shots on goal.

Defensive hustle by freshman Kynzi Thomas and sophomores Natalie Lira, Asha Mathias and Salma Beltran cleared the backfield. Goalie Kristin Prado, also a sophomore, made five saves in the first half.

A tighter Torrington defense stepped up the pressure in the second half.

Powerful kicks by junior Kayden Tucker cleared the backfield and Beltran deflected an attempted attack by Douglas with a header.

Prado tallied nine saves in the second half.

On offense, junior Maggie Jacobson fired off a shot on goal early in the second half.

The Lady Blazers host Newcastle on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
