Torrington firefighters cool down the final hot spots in the remains of a semi tractor that caught fire Monday near the Port of Entry on U.S. Hwy. 26-85 west of Torrington. The driver, Jeremy Betzold of Scottsbluff, Neb., said he was bound for the Western Sugar plant in Torrington when he heard a “popping sound” from the front of the truck. The brake on his trailer set and he got out to direct traffic around the rig when he noticed fire under the cab. “It was pretty crazy,” Betzold said. “I’ve been driving for awhile and I’ve never had anything like this happen.” Officers at the Port of Entry called 9-1-1 after Betzold notified them of the fire. A portion of the highway was reduced to one lane of traffic each way as the truck and trailer were removed.
